Groups provide great opportunities for people to connect and gain support from others experiencing similar issues. In a safe, structured and non-judgmental environment groups reinforce that you are not alone, helps create connection and facilitates social skill building with peers.
Who is this group for?
This group is for kids ages 9-13 who are experiencing feelings of overwhelm, inadequacy and sadness that have persisted and have started interfering with daily functioning.
Does your child say things like:
- “I don’t want to go to school” or “I don’t like school”
- “I don’t feel good” or “I have a stomachache/headache”
- “I just can’t do it” or “I’m just gonna mess it up”
Do you see your usually happy child:
- fall into tears when faced with having to complete homework, attend a social event or do chores
- avoid new things or social interactions
- unable to fall asleep or stay asleep
This group assists in building the skills children need to manage anxiety so they stress less and relax more.
Group members will learn
- Understand how their anxiety and negative thoughts lead to feelings of “dread/doom”
- Strategies to break this vicious cycle and better control their emotions, thoughts, and behavior
- To manage anxiety through gradual, repeated practices and exposure to feared situations
WHO will facilitate group: Josephine Cooper, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and group facilitator. See here for more about me.
